Understanding how your child learns best

Every child learns differently—and sometimes, challenges in the classroom can signal a deeper need for support.

A learning assessment offers valuable insight into your child’s learning profile, helping to identify both strengths and areas where they may benefit from targeted supports.

Whether your child is struggling with reading, writing, maths, or general academic performance, a learning assessment is a powerful tool for unlocking their potential.

What is a learning assessment?

A learning assessment is a structured evaluation that explores your child’s cognitive abilities and academic achievement.

It helps answer questions like:

  • Why is my child falling behind in school?
  • Are there signs of a learning difficulty or disorder?
  • How can we better support their learning at home and in the classroom?

Depending on your child’s needs, the assessment may include:

  • Cognitive testing – Measures intellectual functioning, memory, processing speed, and problem-solving
  • Academic achievement testing – Assesses reading fluency, comprehension, spelling, written expression, and maths reasoning
  • Language and oral expression – Evaluates listening comprehension and verbal communication
  • Written output – Looks at handwriting, spelling, and composition skills
  • Attention and memory

Why consider a learning assessment?

You may want to pursue a learning assessment if your child:

  • Is struggling with reading, writing, or maths despite individualised supports for 6 months or longer
  • Shows signs of frustration, low confidence, or school-related anxiety
  • Is suspected of having a specific learning disability, often referred to by others as dyslexia, dysgraphia, or dyscalculia
  • Needs documentation to access additional school support or accommodations

The results can help guide classroom strategies, tutoring, therapy, and even formal diagnoses if needed.

What does the process involve?

Our learning assessments are tailored to your child’s age, developmental stage, and specific concerns.

The process typically includes evaluations with a psychologist, however based on area of need speech pathologists and occupational therapist evaluations may also be required:

  1. Initial consultation: A 50-minute session with a psychologist to gather background information, understand your concerns, and outline the assessment plan.
  2. Cognitive assessment: Interactive and sometimes tablet-based tasks to understand intellectual functioning.
  3. Academic achievement testing: Assessing reading, writing, maths, or oral language skills. This may be completed over multiple sessions depending on your child’s needs and age.
  4. Report and feedback: You’ll receive a detailed written report outlining your child’s learning profile, strengths, and areas for support. A follow-up session is included to walk you through the results and recommendations.
