What is a learning assessment?
A learning assessment is a structured evaluation that explores your child’s cognitive abilities and academic achievement.
It helps answer questions like:
- Why is my child falling behind in school?
- Are there signs of a learning difficulty or disorder?
- How can we better support their learning at home and in the classroom?
Depending on your child’s needs, the assessment may include:
- Cognitive testing – Measures intellectual functioning, memory, processing speed, and problem-solving
- Academic achievement testing – Assesses reading fluency, comprehension, spelling, written expression, and maths reasoning
- Language and oral expression – Evaluates listening comprehension and verbal communication
- Written output – Looks at handwriting, spelling, and composition skills

- Is struggling with reading, writing, or maths despite individualised supports for 6 months or longer

What does the process involve?
Our learning assessments are tailored to your child’s age, developmental stage, and specific concerns.
The process typically includes evaluations with a psychologist, however based on area of need speech pathologists and occupational therapist evaluations may also be required:
- Initial consultation: A 50-minute session with a psychologist to gather background information, understand your concerns, and outline the assessment plan.
- Cognitive assessment: Interactive and sometimes tablet-based tasks to understand intellectual functioning.
- Academic achievement testing: Assessing reading, writing, maths, or oral language skills. This may be completed over multiple sessions depending on your child’s needs and age.
- Report and feedback: You’ll receive a detailed written report outlining your child’s learning profile, strengths, and areas for support. A follow-up session is included to walk you through the results and recommendations.
