Support to help your child participate and succeed in school

It is common to worry about whether your child is ready for school. You may be concerned that your child is unable to recognise letters or numbers or hold a pencil well. However, there are other skills considered important for school readiness that are not necessarily related to academic performance.

School readiness is a measure of the knowledge, skills and behaviours that enable children to participate and succeed in school. It looks at the development of the child as a whole – their social and emotional skills, physical skills, communication skills and cognitive skills.

For a child to be ready to learn, they need to be emotionally regulated where they are calm and relaxed. We consider skills such as the child being able to go to the toilet by themselves, opening and closing their lunchbox lids, asking for help, waiting, taking turns, sitting on a mat, playing and interacting with others.

Having these skills is really a great basis upon which a child can thrive in their new environment.
