Functional capacity assessments

A Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) helps us understand how a child or young person manages day‑to‑day activities, what they do well, and where they may need extra support to reach their goals.

Why is a Functional Capacity Assessment important?

The assessment looks at everyday skills such as communication, learning, movement, self‑care, and social interaction, in relation to the child or young person’s age. It helps build a clear picture of strengths, challenges, and the supports that will make the biggest difference at home, school, and in the community.

A Functional Capacity Assessment:

  • Focuses on strengths as well as areas where support is needed
  • Helps explain your child or young person’s support needs clearly
  • Guides therapy and support planning and connections

The assessment is carried out by qualified and experienced health professionals, who understand children, young people, and family life.

It usually includes:

  • A detailed conversation with you as the parent or caregiver
  • Getting to know your child or young person and what matters to them
  • Observation in everyday environments such as home, school, or community settings
  • Structured activities or assessments to understand specific skills

This may cover:

  • Movement and coordination
  • Learning and thinking skills
  • Communication
  • Emotional regulation and social skills
  • Daily living skills such as dressing, eating, and personal care

Young people are encouraged to be involved in a way that feels comfortable for them, so their voice and goals are part of the process.

You’ll receive a clear, detailed report that:

  • Highlights strengths and abilities
  • Identifies areas where support would help
  • Includes practical, evidence‑based recommendations

This report can be used to:

  • Plan therapy and supports
  • Give you strategies to use in your daily life
  • Provide you with information about community and informal supports
  • Provide evidence to health care providers, schools and the NDIA, to support funding decisions
  • Help schools and other services better understand your child or young person’s needs

The total time involved depends on individual needs and circumstances. Most functional capacity assessments take around 8–12 hours, which may be split across multiple sessions.
