Does NDIS fund speech therapy and who is eligible?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides funding for speech therapy to support children and adults with disabilities achieve their goals related to communication and social skills.
To be eligible, you must:
Be under 65 years old
Reside in Australia as an Australian citizen (or hold a Permanent or Protected Special Category Visa)
Have a permanent impairment or disability that significantly impacts your daily life
NDIS speech therapy services offers structured, evidence-informed interventions designed to improve communication skills and social interactions. This includes addressing speech, language, communication, and eating or swallowing difficulties.
Speech therapy services are covered in the Capacity Building support, which is designed to help an individual build their independence and skills.
By incorporating early intervention and consistent therapy strategies supported by the NDIS framework, we can significantly improve an individual’s communication skills, helping achieve specific goals outlined within the NDIS plan.
With your NDIS speech therapy support, you can access a variety of comprehensive services, including:
Assessments: NDIS funding covers evaluations to understand and address specific communication needs to increase functional capacity
Individualised therapy plans: Customised strategies to enhance speech, language, and social skills.
Eating and swallowing therapy: Techniques to address feeding and swallowing challenges.
Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems: Support and recommendations for communication devices where necessary.
To maximise the benefits of speech therapy, check with your ECEI partner, LAC or support coordinator to see what specific supports are covered under your plan.
