Red dirt, big hearts, and even bigger fly nets: life as an occupational therapist and speech pathologist in Alice Springs

Jade and Chloe from Ellenbrook and Stirling clinics have jumped at the opportunity to work in Alice Springs this year.

Here, they share their experiences.

“The landscape is so beautiful, and we’ve been able to explore the community which has been so welcoming. However, it’s been an adjustment to get used to the flies!” says Chloe.

“Our time in Alice is all about collaboration, we work closely with teachers and education assistants to support students in meeting their needs and engage in the learning environment.

“We typically go to at least a couple of different schools every week where we meet with staff, complete observations, and collaborate with the school to help achieve the student’s learning goals.

“There have been so many beautiful moments connecting with the staff and students. We were able to travel to Uluru last month as well to support their Yulara school, this was a very special experience for us!

“We had the opportunity to do a sunset tour of ‘The Rock’, which is just as magical as everyone says it is.

“A note for everyone if you go yourselves is to not get fool-uru-ed by Mt Connor! We took some pictures before realising it wasn’t Uluru!

“Working in smaller and remote communities has been one of the most rewarding parts of our trips.

“We’re learning so much from the educators and students we’re working with and it’s a pleasure to be able to share our experiences and knowledge to support them.

“The creativity and deep connection to their community has had a big impact on Jade and I and it’s really transformed our therapy practice” says Chloe.

“Being able to contribute and be a part of the Alice Springs community is something we’ll carry with us for a long time.

“We come home every time with dusty red shoes, full hearts, and a renewed passion for our work.

“These trips reminded us why we do what we do and how much we can learn when we step outside our usual settings.

“If you ever get the chance to support a remote community, definitely take it. It’s an experience that will challenge you, change you, and stay with you long after the red dirt has washed off your shoes.”
