Interoception therapy bundle to support toilet training

Interoception—the ability to understand and respond to internal body signals—is an important skill for emotional regulation, self-awareness and even toileting.
Last year as part of her final occupational therapy placement, Taliya (our now occupational therapist!) developed an engaging and practical interoception program to support children and families in building this important skill.
It’s been great for Taliya to now be working with the Christies Beach team as a new graduate OT and for her to get the chance to use the program she played such a big part in creating.
Taliya has told us that her three favourite activities in the program are:
1. Social stories
The unique social story explains interoception in child-friendly language, helping kids grasp the concept in a way that makes sense to them.
By weaving this concept into a relatable story, children can begin to recognise the connection between their emotions and physical sensations.
2. Toileting decision and action cards
These practical, visual guides support children in developing independence with toileting routines.
By breaking down steps into clear, manageable actions, kids can confidently navigate self-care decisions.
3. ‘If I’m feeling… My body feels…’ visual chart
This interactive tool helps children map emotions onto body sensations by placing visual images on a body outline.
It’s a powerful way for them to connect feelings with physical experiences, fostering self-awareness and emotional regulation.
To further support families, the program includes caregiver handouts that provide practical strategies for reinforcing interoception skills at home, ensuring consistency and ongoing development beyond the clinic.
These resources help families work toward meaningful goals—whether it’s improving self-regulation, increasing independence, or enhancing communication—by making abstract concepts more tangible and relatable.
