Does the NDIS fund early intervention support and who is eligible min

Does the NDIS fund early intervention support and who is eligible?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is an Australian Government initiative providing funding and support to individuals with disabilities — enabling them to access services to enhance their quality of life and independence. Early Childhood Early Intervention (ECEI) focuses on providing essential support to young children with developmental delays or disabilities, helping them achieve better long-term outcomes.

To be eligible for NDIS ECEI services, children must be under 9 years of age with  developmental delay or have a permanent impairment that may fluctuate or worsen over time. The purpose of early support is to lessen the impact of the impairment on a child’s functional capacity, by providing support to the child and family at the earliest possible stage. Early support also aims to strengthen the sustainability of informal supports, such as building the capacity and skills of carers.

How does NDIS early intervention work?

NDIS early intervention services are covered under the Capacity Building Supports budget, specifically under Improved Daily Living. These services offer evidence-based interventions, designed to support the development of essential skills in young children. Early Start Australia provides tailored multidisciplinary therapy plans that focus on various developmental areas, including:

  • Speech and language development: Enhancing communication skills through Speech Pathology.

  • Physical development: Improving motor skills and physical abilities through Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy.
  • Emotional regulation: Supporting emotional well-being and coping strategies, as well as adaptive skills and positive, proactive behaviour.
  • Social skills: Promoting positive social interactions and relationships.
  • Participation abilities: Enhancing skills to participate in the everyday activities and experiences of childhood.
