Podiatry for children, or Paediatric podiatry, is a specialised area of podiatry that addresses the different foot and lower leg needs of babies, children and adolescents as they develop movement skills and grow. This involves therapies such as exercise, movement training, stretches, strengthening, motor learning and play.

Foot and lower leg health is essential for injury and pain prevention and enables greater comfort during physical movement in everday activites.

What does podiatry involve?

Podiatry treatment for your child begins with an assessment where we look at their motor skills and overall development.

We identify your child’s ability strengths and weaknesses and then design a therapy plan that addresses their individual needs and offer joint appointments with physiotherapists and occupational therapists as required.

Paediatric Podiatrist are qualified health professionals who specialise in the care of lower limbs including the foot and ankle. They are experienced with assessing, diagnosing, and treating a child’s lower limb concerns and can identify any issues and offer early-intervention therapy strategies to influence an individual’s ability to move and participate.

If you are a parent, no one knows your child as well as you do. If you have any concerns about their foot or lower leg health you can seek the advice of a physiotherapist. Or maybe your GP, community nurse, child carer or teacher have concerns. Podiatry for your child can help treat issues with:

balance, posture, coordination and gross motor skills
joint, muscle or nervous system problems causing weakness, pain or movement difficulties

It’s important to remember you don’t need a doctor’s referral to see a podiatrist. Medicare does not cover podiatry, but some costs are often covered by ancillary private health insurance.
