Does NDIS fund cerebral palsy support and who is eligible min

Does NDIS fund cerebral palsy support and who is eligible?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides funding to support individuals with cerebral palsy, helping them access essential services and improve their quality of life.

To be eligible, you must:

  •  Be under 65 years old
  •  Reside in Australia as an Australian citizen (or hold a Permanent or Protected Special Category Visa)
  • Have a permanent impairment or disability that significantly impacts your daily life

The severity of cerebral palsy is determined based on five different levels from the Gross Motor Function Classification System, with levels 3, 4, and 5 typically qualifying for NDIS funding due to the significant support required.

How does NDIS cerebral palsy support work?

Cerebral palsy is a neurological condition that affects movement and muscle coordination, often caused by damage to the brain before, during, or shortly after birth. This condition can lead to difficulties with mobility, communication, and daily living activities.

Individuals with cerebral palsy require various supports depending on the severity of symptoms. This means individuals may need support from any of the three categories—Capacity Building, Capital, and Core Supports—all aiming to help build independence and improve daily living skills.

Generally, most participants with cerebral palsy need assistance with daily activities, and many receive assistive technology to improve mobility. Other major support areas include consumables, social/community activities, and transport.

By incorporating early intervention and consistent therapy strategies supported by the NDIS framework, we can significantly improve quality of life and developmental outcomes of those with cerebral palsy.
