When you Need Formal Evidence to Support Your Child – Understanding Functional Capacity Assessment and When it may be Required.

Functional Capacity Assessments at Early Start Australia

In some situations, families are asked to provide formal evidence about their child or young person’s needs — and it’s not always clear what’s required.

When this happens, a Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) may be required. But it’s important to understand that most families don’t need an FCA to get started with support.

A Functional Capacity Assessment provides a clear, independent picture of how a child or young person functions in their everyday life.

It looks at:

  • Strengths and abilities
  • Challenges and daily support needs
  • How a child manages activities across key areas of daily life — at home, school and in the community.

A Functional Capacity Assessment is often recommended when formal documentation is required to support important decisions about a child’s care, supports or services.

Most families don’t need an FCA to start support, but formal evidence may prompt a request for one when:

  • They know their child needs support but are being asked to prove it
  • Progress has stalled and a deeper view and more documentation is required
  • A major transition is coming up, and they want the right supports in place
  • Different professionals are giving different opinions
  • Things aren’t improving and it’s unclear why.

Functional Capacity Assessments are commonly used to support:

  • Education planning and school adjustments
  • Major transition points, such as starting school or changing environments
  • Complex or unclear presentations where a comprehensive view is needed
  • Formal evidence to support funding or eligibility including, but not limited to, the NDIS.

Early Start Australia does not require an assessment to begin therapy support, but if needed, a qualified health professional will conduct the FCA. Our FCAs are:

  1. Independent and evidence-based
  2. Focused on real-life functioning, beyond diagnosis
  3. Clearly written so families, schools, and decision-makers understand needed supports and reasons.

While a Functional Capacity Assessment can offer an evidence-based path forward when required, often the best first step is to begin with targeted support. A brief period of therapeutic intervention can not only help your child make progress but also provide clear insight into effective strategies and necessary supports.

At the end, we offer a concise summary that highlights your child’s progress, successful approaches, and recommendations for next steps, along with practical tips you can apply immediately. This differs from a FCA which is a formal report typically required when specific evidence is needed.
